Waiting to Exhale
I woke up at 2:30 this morning after some anxious dreaming and wasn’t able to fall back asleep. So I figure I would see if there were any movies worth watching on Netflix that I could zone out to and perhaps fall asleep on the couch.
I came across “Waiting to Exhale” which is a 90s film starring Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, and some other people. My memories of this movie: I was in 4th grade when it came out and I watched it with my friend Angie and really had no idea what was really going on. All I really took from it was when Angela Bassett lit her cheating husband’s car on fire, full of his stuff, in the driveway of their house- heck ya?!
Also, McKinley grade school had a fundraiser that we had to sell some overpriced candy bars in order to get “points” to buy crap you couldn’t sell to anyone…well guess what I bought? “Waiting to Exhale Soundtrack” which I listened to more than that stupid CD was worth hearing—oh baby, that brings me back! Matthew would be so proud of my soulful R&B upbringing. Shoop shoop de doop Whitney!
Okay, so I have some memories riding on this film- time to revisit?
Here we go::::
Okay, so this film is absolutely the most desperate and hypocritical piece of crap I have ever heard of!!! The film starts off as I said I remembered: Angela Bassett’s character’s husband leaves her for a white woman and tries to screw her out of everything she deserves—-and he is such a piece for doing that to her, how dare he!? right!? So we are all like: “cheating is bad! what a jerk, blah blah blah!” And then all of these women spend the entire movie sleeping with married men and wondering why they wont leave their husbands!!! Are you freaking kidding me? I am really trying to grasp the moral of the story- is it cheating that is bad- or just inter-racial cheating on the main characters in the film?
So get this—the “good guy” in this film (I think he is played by Wesley snipes, but I don’t care enough to look it up) has a wife back home who is dying of breast cancer, and so he tries to have an affair with Angela Bassett- so they get a hotel room and then he talks about how he loves his wife and how nothing can touch that—(so we are thinking “okay, so it is just about sex, I got it”) but no, they and up cuddling instead and he ends up falling in love with Angela Bassett- which is almost worse considering the situation. OH MY GOSH.
Even the Allstate guy (“Are you in good hands?”) is cheating on his wife with Whitney Houston….but its okay, because he doesn’t love his wife…she was pregnant when they got married- and, oh yeah, she is pregnant again, so he can’t leave her til the baby is born. And Whitney Houston really “needs a man” just like all the rest of the desperate hoochies in this movie—her own mother is angry that she isn’t pursuing this married man because he “loves” her. I don’t get it—so selfish and backhanded.
So anyways…not the best movie I have ever seen. And now I am too worked up on a rant to go back to sleep- which was all I wanted in the first place.
